How to prevent burnout as a creative: let’s talk about it
It’s 2021 and there are a lot of societal “norms” surrounding work, not all of which are healthy. Having the ability to work is great, and working a job that you enjoy has many more benefits other than just the pay… but, overworking is becoming more and more prevalent in this day and age, and it’s leading to many people feeling burned out.
The definition of “burnout” according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is “exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration.” Sound familiar? If so, this newsletter is written just for you.
While taking a long vacation is easily the best way to deal with burnout, that’s not always possible. So if you’re still saving up your vacation days to take a break sometime down the road, here are three tips to help you deal with burnout now, in the present…
Number one: separate work life from home life.
This is something simple that can help you get your mind off of work when you’re not at work. Make a personal boundary not to check your work email or work on projects outside of the office. This will help you reset mentally when you’re away from the office, which will leave you feeling refreshed when it is time to go into work.
Number two: take brief pauses throughout your day.
It’s not very likely that you get too many breaks throughout your shift, outside of a lunch break. But look for little opportunities throughout your day to pull away from what you’re working on and just focus on breathing. Try to concentrate on your thoughts and what’s worrying you, and write down all that’s weighing on your mind so you can deal with it at the appropriate time. This doesn’t have to take long; just allow yourself a few minutes every hour to do it, and it will actually increase your productivity.
Number three: make sure you’re getting enough rest.
The way you take care of yourself outside of your workplace will greatly affect the way you feel at work. Getting a full 8 hours of sleep will change not only your energy levels, but also your attitude and general outlook on life. You will show up to work with a much more positive attitude when you’re well-rested versus when you’re not – so be sure and prioritize sleep!
